How to use This or That

What this tool does

This or That gives you an endless stream of light, two-option questions — coffee or tea, beach or mountains, books or films — and asks you to pick the one you prefer. As soon as you choose, a fresh pair appears. There is no score and no wrong answer; it is a fast, low-stakes way to learn what you (or the people around you) actually lean towards. The tool ships with well over a hundred original pairs, all about everyday tastes and habits, so it stays fresh for a long session.

There are two ways to play. In I choose mode you tap the option you like and move on. In Decide for me mode the tool flips a fair coin between the two sides for you — useful when you honestly cannot pick and just want something to break the tie.

When you would use it

It is a natural ice-breaker. At the start of a meeting, a class, a party or a first meet-up, a couple of This or That rounds get people talking without putting anyone on the spot. Everyone has an opinion on pancakes versus waffles, and the disagreements are friendly by design.

It also works as a solo break. When you need to step away from a screen-heavy task for two minutes, a handful of quick choices is a gentle reset that does not pull you into anything demanding. Some people use it as a warm-up for journaling or self-reflection — running through tastes you have never actually put words to. And the “decide for me” mode is a genuinely useful tie-breaker for the small, genuinely 50/50 calls that do not deserve a long think.

How to use it

  1. Choose a mode. Leave it on I choose to pick yourself, or switch to Decide for me to let the tool flip a coin.
  2. Read the pair. In I-choose mode, tap the option you prefer.
  3. In Decide-for-me mode, press Decide for me and the tool reveals which side it landed on.
  4. Press Next pair to move on to a fresh question whenever you like.
  5. Watch the tally at the bottom — it shows how many times you leaned towards the first option, the second, and how many pairs you have seen.
  6. Press Reset on the tally to start the count again.

Getting the most out of it

In a group, go around the circle and have everyone answer the same pair out loud before moving on — the split is always more interesting than any single answer. For pairs where the room is divided, ask one person from each side to explain in a sentence; that is where the real conversation starts.

On your own, slow down on the pairs that make you hesitate. A question you cannot answer instantly is often the one worth thinking about. And remember the tally is just a mirror, not a verdict — leaning towards the first option 70% of the time says more about how the pairs are worded than about you.

If you would rather spin a wheel of your own options, try the decision wheel. For a pure coin toss between two choices use the coin flipper, and for a numbered random pick the dice roller does the job. For more party-style questions, the Would You Rather and Truth or Dare tools sit right alongside this one.

Privacy

Everything happens inside your browser. The full pair list is bundled into the page, the random choices use your device’s built-in secure random generator, and your picks and running tally never leave the tab. There is no account, no upload and no analytics on what you choose. Close the page and the tally is gone — which also means the tool keeps working even with no connection once it has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a right answer to a This or That question?
No. Every pair is a matter of taste — coffee or tea, beach or mountains, early bird or night owl. There is no correct choice and no score. The point is the quick, honest gut reaction and the conversation that follows when a group compares answers. Treat a surprising pick as an invitation to ask why, not as a mistake.
How does the 'decide for me' mode work?
When you switch to 'decide for me', the tool stops waiting for your tap and instead flips a fair coin between the two options using your browser's secure random generator. Each side has an equal chance. It is handy when you genuinely cannot choose and want a nudge — but it is random, so use it as a tie-breaker rather than real advice.
What does the tally count, and is it saved?
The tally counts how many times you picked the first option versus the second during the current visit, plus how many pairs you have seen. It is a light way to spot your leanings. It lives only in the page while it is open and is cleared the moment you close or reload the tab — nothing is written to disk.
Is anything I do here sent to a server?
No. The whole list of This or That pairs is bundled into the page, the random choices are made on your device, and your picks and tally never leave the browser. There is no account, no upload and no tracking of which options you choose. You could use the tool with no internet connection at all once the page has loaded.
