How to use Blank PDF Generator

What this tool does

The Blank PDF Generator creates a PDF from nothing — no source file required. You choose how many pages to produce, what paper size and orientation to use, and whether you want completely blank pages or pages with a printed pattern: horizontal ruled lines, a square grid, or a dot grid. Click Generate and the PDF is assembled in your browser in a matter of seconds, then downloaded straight to your device.

Why you might need it

The most straightforward use is creating printable notebook paper. Many people prefer to print their own ruled or dot-grid sheets rather than buying a notebook, especially when they want a non-standard paper size or a specific line spacing. Teachers often need a stack of blank answer sheets or grid paper for maths and science classes. Engineers and architects sometimes need blank graph paper in an unusual size that stationery shops do not carry.

Blank PDFs also have practical uses beyond printing. A one-page blank PDF is a handy placeholder when a form or portal requires a document upload but you have nothing to submit yet. A multi-page blank PDF can be used as a backing template in design software that layers content on top of existing pages. Digital note-taking apps that accept PDFs as backgrounds — GoodNotes, Notability, Xodo — work perfectly with these generated sheets.

The dot-grid pattern has grown particularly popular among bullet journal enthusiasts who use digital or hybrid paper systems. Generating a custom-size dot-grid PDF for a specific tablet screen ratio (such as 4:3 for an iPad) is something this tool handles directly.

How to use it

  1. Set the Number of pages — the default is one, the maximum is 500.
  2. Choose a Paper size from the preset list, or select Custom and enter width and height in millimetres.
  3. Pick Portrait or Landscape orientation.
  4. Choose a Page pattern: Blank, Ruled, Grid, or Dots.
  5. Click Generate PDF and wait for the indicator to finish (ruled and dot patterns with many pages take a few seconds).
  6. Click Download PDF to save the result.

Common pitfalls

The Custom size inputs are in millimetres. If you enter pixel or inch values without converting, the page will be the wrong size. For reference: A4 is 210 × 297 mm, US Letter is 216 × 279 mm, and a US index card is 76 × 127 mm.

Generating 500 pages with a dense pattern can take several seconds. The browser tab will not freeze, but you may notice a short delay. The busy indicator will clear as soon as the work is done.

PDF page size is distinct from the paper your printer uses. If you generate an A5 PDF and print it on A4 paper, the printer will scale it up or place it in the corner depending on your print settings. Set the print dialog to “actual size” and match the paper tray to the PDF page size for an accurate result.

Tips and alternatives

For bullet journaling, the dot-grid pattern on an A5 page in portrait mode is a classic starting point. Import the PDF into GoodNotes or Notability and set it as the default template for new notebooks. For maths and science worksheets, the grid pattern on a Letter or A4 page pairs well with the PDF Merger tool — generate the grid pages, then merge them with a title-page PDF from another tool.

If you need a PDF with mixed page types — a cover page, then ruled pages, then graph pages — generate each section separately and merge them using the PDF Merger tool. For adding a watermark or header to the blank pages before printing, the PDF Stamper tool can overlay text on each page.

Frequently asked questions

Does any file get uploaded when I generate a blank PDF?
Nothing is uploaded because there is nothing to upload — this tool has no input file at all. The PDF is assembled from scratch by JavaScript running in your browser. The only data that leaves your device is the download you trigger yourself. You can confirm this by watching your browser's Network tab: it stays empty while the tool works.
What paper sizes are available, and can I use a custom size?
The presets are A4, A5, Letter, Legal, and Tabloid. There is also a custom option where you enter width and height in millimetres. The minimum dimension is 10 mm. This covers unusual formats like index cards (76 × 127 mm), half-letter (140 × 216 mm), or any proprietary size your printer requires.
What do the page patterns look like?
Blank produces completely empty pages. Ruled draws horizontal lines spaced 7 mm apart with a 20 mm margin on all sides, like a standard lined notebook. Grid draws a 7 mm square grid with a 15 mm margin, similar to engineering or graph paper. Dots places a 7 mm dot grid — the format popularised by bullet journalers — also with a 15 mm margin. All lines and dots are light blue-grey so they remain visible but do not compete with handwriting.
How many pages can I generate at once?
The tool supports up to 500 pages in a single run. For a ruled or grid pattern, generating 500 pages takes a few seconds because each line or dot is drawn individually by pdf-lib. A 500-page blank PDF is produced almost instantly. If you need more than 500 pages, generate multiple PDFs and merge them with the PDF Merger tool.
Can I print the PDF and have the lines or dots match standard ruled paper?
The lines and dots are spaced 7 mm apart, which matches a typical narrow-rule notebook. For wide-rule (8.7 mm spacing) or college-rule (7.1 mm spacing), the 7 mm setting is a close match. The 20 mm margin keeps content well clear of the punch holes on standard three-hole-punched paper.
