How to use To-Do List

What this tool does

This is a straightforward to-do list that lives in your browser. You add tasks, tick them off as you finish them, edit the wording when plans change, and delete anything you no longer need. A running count shows how many tasks are still active and how many are done, and a filter lets you switch between seeing everything, only the unfinished work, or only what you have completed. The whole list is saved automatically, so it is waiting for you the next time you open the page.

There is no account, no setup, and no clutter. It is meant for the kind of quick list you would otherwise scribble on a sticky note or the back of an envelope — except this one does not get lost and keeps its own tally.

Use cases

A to-do list is one of those tools that fits almost any situation. Some common ones:

  • Daily planning. Drop in the handful of things you want to get through today and clear them as you go.
  • Shopping and errands. Build the list at home, then check items off while you are out.
  • Project steps. Break a larger task into small, concrete actions so the next move is always obvious.
  • Packing lists. Reuse the same kind of list before every trip.
  • Capturing interruptions. When something pops up mid-task, add it here instead of letting it derail what you are doing.

Because the list persists, it also works well as a lightweight ongoing backlog — a place to park ideas and small jobs until you have time for them.

How to use it

  1. Type a task into the New task field and press Enter or click Add task. New tasks appear at the top of the list.
  2. Tick the checkbox to mark a task done. Done tasks show with a line through them and stop counting toward the active total.
  3. To edit, click the task text or the pencil icon. Change the wording and press Enter or Save; press Escape to cancel. Saving an empty task deletes it.
  4. To delete a single task, click the trash icon on its row.
  5. Use the All / Active / Completed filter to control which tasks are visible. The counts above always describe the complete list.
  6. Clear completed removes every finished task in one click. Clear all empties the list entirely.

Every checkbox, edit field, and button is reachable with the keyboard, so you can run the whole list without touching the mouse.

Privacy & your data

This tool keeps everything on your own device. Your tasks are written to your browser’s local storage and never sent anywhere — there is no server, no database, and no analytics tied to your list. That has one important consequence: the list belongs to this specific browser on this specific device.

If you clear your browsing data, your tasks are erased along with it. The same is true if you use the browser’s private or incognito mode, where storage is discarded when the window closes. The list will not follow you to another browser, another computer, or your phone, because there is no cloud sync and no cross-device access. If a task list matters to you, treat it as you would a note on your desk: handy and private, but local. To keep a permanent record, copy important tasks somewhere you back up.

Tips

Keep individual tasks small and concrete. “Email the supplier about the late order” is easier to act on — and to tick off — than “supplier stuff.” If a task feels too big, split it into two.

Use the Active filter when your list gets long; hiding completed items removes visual noise and keeps your attention on what is left. Switch to Completed at the end of the day if you like seeing what you accomplished, then use Clear completed to start the next day fresh.

Add tasks the moment they occur to you rather than trusting your memory — a list only helps if it is complete. And because the data is local, this tool is genuinely fast: there is no loading spinner and no sync delay, so capturing a thought takes a second or less.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my to-do list stored?
Your tasks are stored in this browser only, using its local storage. Nothing is sent to a server. If you clear your browser data, use a different browser, or open the page on another device, your list will not appear there. There is no cloud sync and no account.
Will my tasks still be here after I close the tab?
Yes. The list is saved automatically every time you change it, so closing the tab or restarting your computer keeps everything intact. The only things that erase it are clearing your browser storage, using private or incognito mode, or a browser extension that wipes site data.
How do I edit a task I already added?
Click the task text or the pencil icon next to it. The row turns into a text field — change the wording and press Enter or click Save. Press Escape to cancel. If you clear all the text and save, the task is removed.
What does the Active / Completed filter do?
It changes which tasks are shown without deleting anything. All shows everything, Active hides finished tasks so you can focus on what is left, and Completed shows only what you have ticked off. The counts above the list always reflect the full list.
Is this tool free, and does it work offline?
It is completely free with no sign-up. Once the page has loaded, the list runs entirely in your browser, so it keeps working even if you go offline. Your data never leaves your device.
