How to use Packing List Generator

What this tool does

The Packing List Generator builds a tailored travel checklist in seconds. You tell it what kind of trip you are taking, how many nights you will be away, and a few details — whether you are flying, travelling with children, or plan to do laundry — and it assembles a complete, organised list. Items are grouped into clear sections: essentials, clothing scaled to your trip length, toiletries, electronics and documents. Every item has a tick box, you can add your own custom items, and the whole list can be copied or downloaded as text.

When you’d use it

Packing is where good trips quietly go wrong — the forgotten charger, the missing passport, the single pair of socks too few. This tool is for the night before departure, when you want a dependable checklist without building one from memory. It suits the frequent traveller who wants a fast starting point, the once-a-year holidaymaker who would rather not forget anything, and the parent packing for a whole family who needs the children’s gear accounted for too. Because it covers everything from a weekend city break to a two-week camping trip, it adapts to almost any journey.

How to use it

  1. Choose your trip type — beach, city break, business, camping, winter or road trip. This swaps in the right clothing and gear.
  2. Enter the number of nights you will be away. Clothing quantities scale to match.
  3. Tick the toggles that apply: flying adds travel documents, kids adds a children’s section, and laundry trims the clothing counts.
  4. Work through the generated checklist, ticking items as you pack them.
  5. Add anything missing with the custom item box.
  6. Use Copy list or Download .txt to keep or share the finished checklist.

How it works

The generator combines bundled, original category templates. A core set of essentials, toiletries, electronics and documents appears on every list, while the trip type contributes a tailored clothing and gear section. Clothing quantities are calculated from your trip length: the tool treats travel days as nights plus one and assigns each garment a quantity based on how many days it covers. Fixed items appear once. The toggles then adjust the result — adding sections or trimming counts — so the final list reflects your real trip rather than a generic one.

Tips

Be honest about the laundry toggle: if your accommodation has a washing machine or you are happy to use a launderette, enabling it can roughly halve the clothes you carry. Treat the suggested quantities as a sensible baseline, not a rule — adjust for your own habits, the climate and any activities that need special kit. Add custom items as soon as you think of them so nothing slips through, and tick items only once they are physically in the bag. The downloaded text file is easy to print or share with a travelling companion so everyone packs from the same list. For working out how long your journey will take, see the trip duration calculator; for distances, the unit converter; and for sorting out tips abroad, the tip by country guide.

Privacy

This generator runs entirely in your browser. The templates are bundled into the page, and your trip choices, custom items and ticks never leave your device — nothing is uploaded or logged. Your list is saved only in your own browser’s local storage so it survives a refresh, and you can clear that whenever you like.

Frequently asked questions

How are the clothing quantities decided?
Clothing items scale with the length of your trip. The generator counts your travel days as the number of nights plus one, then suggests a quantity for each garment based on how many days one of it comfortably covers — underwear and tops roughly per day, trousers and outfits across several days, swimwear and smart outfits less often still. Fixed items like a charger, a passport or a tent appear once regardless of trip length. If you tick the laundry option, the generator trims the larger clothing quantities, because you can wash and re-wear instead of packing a fresh set for every day.
Why does the list change when I toggle flying, kids or laundry?
Each toggle reshapes the list. Flying adds an extra documents section for your passport, visa paperwork and boarding passes — things you do not need for a road trip. Travelling with kids adds a dedicated section with spare clothes, comfort items, activities and child medication. The laundry toggle reduces clothing counts so you pack lighter. The trip type itself swaps in a whole tailored set of clothing and gear, so a camping list looks nothing like a business list. Together these controls turn a generic checklist into one that fits your actual trip.
Can I add my own items and will they be saved?
Yes. Use the custom item box to add anything the templates miss — a travel adapter, a specific medication, a gift you are carrying — and it appears in its own section. Your custom items, along with which boxes you have ticked, are saved in your browser's local storage, so if you come back to the same tool on the same device and browser your list and progress are still there. Clearing your browser data, or using a different device or browser, starts fresh.
How do I keep or share the finished list?
Once you are happy with the list, use Copy list to put the whole checklist on your clipboard as plain text, or Download .txt to save it as a file. The text version keeps the section headings and shows each item with a tick box, so you can paste it into a notes app, email it to a travel companion, or print it. The progress counter at the top shows how many items you have packed so far.
Is my packing list kept private?
Completely. The generator runs entirely in your browser — the templates are bundled into the page and your choices, custom items and ticks never leave your device. Nothing is uploaded to a server and nothing is logged. The only thing stored is a copy in your own browser's local storage so your list survives a page refresh; you can clear that at any time through your browser settings.
